Botox has for years proven to be a safe and straightforward nonsurgical procedure. The procedure blocks the nerve’s ability to send impulses to muscles when Botox is injected. As a result of reduced muscle activity, moderate to severe lines that appear between the brows are improved for a period of time. It is the only approved treatment for severe lines in this area of the face.
This procedure uses a tiny needle to inject Botox into several precise locations on the face. A client will feel little if any, discomfort during a Botox session since the needle is so small and only a tiny amount of liquid is used. No anesthetic other than a topical cream to lightly numb the area is required, and many patients resume their day without any restrictions. You may see some slight, temporary bruising where the procedure took place, but this often fades away within several days if it appears at all.

Your muscles move when they receive impulses from nerves. Botox blocks those impulses to muscles that are causing lines to develop on the face. Our board-certified doctors know which nerves to target and will avoid the muscles that control regular facial expressions.
The most common side effect experienced by clients is bruising. In some cases, temporary weakness of nearby muscles can occur if the Botox migrates to areas outside the treatment area. In sporadic cases, there can be an asymmetry facial expression or a drooping of an eyelid. The amount of risk to these side effects depends on what is being treated, and it will be thoroughly discussed when you meet with our medical professional. Fortunately, Botox is wholly reversible and no permanent changes will occur. Any side effects, even the rare ones, last only a few weeks.
A client will lie on an exam table that is raised slightly. The treatment area will be cleaned and disinfected with a nonalcohol-based cleaner. If a client wishes, a topical anesthetic can be applied to the area to numb it. It’s important to remember that Botox does not numb any area of the face. Once the treatment area is prepared, Botox is injected into the areas outlined by the doctor. Typically, clients should expect four to five areas on either side of the forehead and two to three areas around the eyes. More areas can be selected if more wrinkles need to be treated. If bleeding occurs at the injection site, ice is used to control bleeding and bruising. This method is preferred over applying pressure to ensure the Botox does not migrate outside of the area being treated.
Clients should avoid laying down for up to four hours after the procedure to ensure the Botox does not spread out to other areas of the face. To keep bruising to a minimum, avoid taking pain relief products like aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen.
You should start to see results within three to ten days. Some clients take photographs before the procedure so they can see the difference. Your memory may not always be the best way to check results as the change will be gradual. Keep in mind that Botox does not erase lines, but rather relaxes the muscles that cause them. This means that deeper lines will remain but will be less pronounced and superficial lines will nearly vanish.
A client may elect to have an additional procedure at our clinic for dermal fillers in order to plump up the areas that are now relaxed. Also, additional Botox treatments may be needed for deeper wrinkles to achieve a client’s goals. In some cases, dermal filler is a better choice to achieve the goals of a client and this will be one of the things they will discuss with their medical professional.
